Hallux Fusion
Hallux metatarsal phalangeal joint fusion is probably the most common operation that Dr O’Sullivan performs. This means straightening the big toe, getting rid of any arthritis or deformity and aligning it so it is both comfortable, easy to wear shoes and easy to perform most activities including walking, light jogging, playing golf or tennis. Recovery from this surgery is about 2 months and requires immobilisation in a surgical shoe for that time. It is usually 4 weeks after the surgery that the patient can drive. Hallux fusion means that there is a plate and screw left in the big toe indefinitely unless it causes a problem.
